What are citations and why are they important? Well, I’m glad you asked. Citations are simply mentions of your business on another website/directory. They usually mention your business name, address, phone number and website URL, but not all of them will.
Citations are a key component for Local SEO, as they provide Google more proof to trust that you exist at that location. So the idea is to create citation listings that all mention your business details, to give Google a much stronger trust about your business’s contact information and categorization. This does not mean make as many as possible as creating too many citations can become very difficult to maintain leaving you in all sorts of mess.

To make your life a little easier and to keep track of them all, I have created a spreadsheet for you to download. Google Drive users can click ‘File’ and then take a copy. If you don’t use Google Drive, simply click ‘File’ once you have opened the spreadsheet and then click ‘Download As’ and choose your preferred file type.
This spreadsheet will allow you to keep track of what listings you have requested and which one’s already exist. It will also allow you to make notes on any information that needs to be changed such as business name, address, etc.
Keep your NAP (Name, Address & Phone Number) consistent. If your business has existed at an old address or used an old business name, make sure any old citations are corrected to stop Google from getting confused.
If Google can see listings with your old address and new address, it will get confused and have a lower level of trust associated with your business. This may then result in ranking lower in the local pack.
